Light Rail Offers a Favorable Alternative in U.S. Cities

Light Rail Transit, also known as LRT, is the most popular rail transit technology in the United States, with over 20 systems in operation in such cities as Houston, Denver, Dallas, and Portland, OR.  LRT is powered by electricity through suspended wires above the train, and can be described as a cross between a streetcar and rapid transit (like MetroRail in Miami).  Like a streetcar, light rail can operate at low speeds mixed within general street traffic, offering a diversion for significant traffic growth into a high-quality transit service.  Growing ridership of such successful systems like the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority in California suggests that once someone has tried light rail, they find that it is a fast, comfortable, and convenient way to travel.
